SVAA signed a partnership with Cerza conservation, Cerza Zoological Park and the school Claude Bernard (France) which is one of the school UNESCO network. This partnership has for aim to sensibilize youngs to the Hoolock Gibbon conservation and to bring up thinking about this subject via some practical works in communication.

Dawn, one of our first Gibbon welcomed at the center, has been shifted to a rehabilitation aviary in Silsotchigre rehabilitation center. Thus, he made his first steps towards the process which will give him back freedom.

CALL FOR EVERYBODY
The Huro Program is now a reference for the Department of Forests as for the local population of the Meghalaya state, the financial needs of the Wildlife rescue center are increasing with the welcoming of new residents. We are facing an emergency state, due to a lack of funds for the construction of new cages, the rescue of many animals remains pending (2 Gibbons, 1 Loris, 4 Maccaques, 2 Bears, 2 Tigers...).
We call for every persons, institutions or foundations to help us.
We are also looking for more patrons for our residents.

New rescues have been done by the equip of the Program. We wanted to salute the seriousness and the devotion of our local staff: Pakseng, Tamsil, Sotchi and Babu. The story in pictures of the last rescues clic here
May 2009
Very good news for this month, Emeraude found out the use of her legs. Her health state becomes better thanks to an attention of every instants from all the staff and adapted cares and food. A new rescue, a young female Assamese Maccaque, Saphir, 4 months old. At present, she remains shocked by her detention, happily her degree of impregnation is low that will facilitates her rehabilitation. She will join to Bilbo and Golum. You can already adopt her. The Department of Forests has rescued a baby Langur, the President is approaching the authorities in order to welcome the animal in the Huro Program. In effect, this species of Primate is particularly sensitive to captivity. Save a Langur is often a miracle, thus Mr Magne, support by Mme Gandhi, attempt to convince the Forest authorities about the necessity to hand over the animal to a specialized center as the one of the Huro Program
An article is published in the Shillong Times, the most famous daily newspaper of the state, very appreciated by the locals. This allows to relay the actions, to inform the population regarding the objectives and the reasons of being of the Program in the area. To consult it, clic here
Finally, some news about Espoir, happy to find again the trees inside his rehabilitation aviary, waiting for his relaese in the jungle above the station.

Tendua (France) answer once again to our appeal: 500 euros

Zoological Park of Mulhouse (France) supports the Program: 1500 euros
In France, an artcile is published in the number of May of 30 Millions d'Amis le Magazine.

A new page has been created for the ecovolunteer experience.
April 2009
The Huro Program takes some scale and the rescue operations are multiplicated. Now, the Huro Program welcomes three Maccaques and three Gibbons. The last arrived are Espoir (Hope in french language), 7 years old, chained up to a wood stockage in a village where the villagers planned to sell him in few times, then Emeraude (Emerald), a very young female of three years old whose parents have certainly been killed during her capture. She has her two legs paralysed. A radio has been done but does not reveal any fracture. Her health is improved day by day thanks to the devotion of the whole staff who takes turns to provide her and all the lodgers the necesary cares. She needs a permanent presence. Remind that a Gibbon becomes free from the contact of the mother only at the age of 2 years old, so you can easily imagine her traumatism and distress.

Emeraude
We remind you that you can support our action in adopting one of them in the “help us” part.
In order to continue in this way we needs your support.
Report 1 (8th April)
Report 2 (20th April)
Mach 2009
The president and now Director of the Huro Program, Mr Magne, return in India on 8th March. The activities of rescue were quickly undertaken and on 16th March, a new arrival was welcomed at the centre. Macaque of 3 ½ years old, Long-Night, was rescued after three years of a painful detention in a village in the Garo Hills. He is now in quarantine in Tura where Pakseng and Tamsil take care of him with devotion.
Photographic report
Then, on 28th March, the first Gibbon of the Huro Program was rescued in a house from Tura after his escape from his cage the week following his buying in a village. Dawn, is a male Hoolock of 4 years old. Kept in quarantine, he receives the necessary cares for his physic and psychic health. He turns already his eyes towards freedom, that he will recover after the rehabilitation process and when he will choose, after attaining adulthood (7 years old) a partner (very difficult choice for the Gibbon). It is a long way in front of him, but the team of the Program will be there to bring him nearer and nearer his wild life, free.

We wishing you all a good and happy year 2009.
The foundation Le Pal Nature organized a collect of clothes within the staff of the Park, thus we will be able to send around 400 kg of clothes to the villagers of Silsotchigre. This is also thanks to the generosity of the transpoter Cap-west (France) who proposed us to carry it until India for free. Many thanks for the participants of the collect.
The association Tendua support now the Huro Program: 500 euros.

Activities report
This is the heart broken that we give you the last news of the Program. The attempt of rescue that we had engaged in order to take the three gibbons from the Shillong minizoo (state capital of Meghalaya) unfortunely failed. However, after having contacting all the highest authorities of the state, as of the country (until the Indian Minister of Environment), with the support of our patron, Mme Gandhi, we keep hope and do not let our harms down, a chance remains.
The last improvement of the structures (second quarantine cage, fitting of the care center, stock of medicines and veterinary instruments, electricity and running water in the station), the employment of a local veterinary, a manager and a veterinary assistant, have been possible only thanks to the active support of the Foundation Le Pal Nature.
The Zoological Park La Bourbansais renew its support with a donation of 250 euros.
We wanted also to thanks particularly the patrons of Bilbo and Golum who provide us a precious help.

Activities report
Many thing have been done during these last months. Since our return in the Garo Hills, the Huro Program became concrete with the first instatllations of the center, the Silsotchigre Wildlife Rescue Center on the land of the village of the same name.

The first actions engaged towards the local population have begun with the distribution of some rapid tests against malaria (P.falciparum) that allowed already to provide help and cares to more than ten people.

Demonstration during the distribution of the rapid tests
The purchase of 4x4 vehicule was essential, this last, more than for the activities of the center, allows the transport of the sick persons at the nearest hospital (Tura).

Concerning sensitization, SVAA engages presently the process to open the first free private english school, turened over wildlife and environment, the entrance will be selected regarding to the means of the student's parents. By this way, we want to give a chance to the children issued from the poor families to receive a good education and thus have larger possibilities for their future.
The Wildlife Conservation English Medium School will welcome children from four villages, including Silsotchigre, from nursery to class IV (around 13 years old). Four teachers will be in charge of the teaching of the governemental official subjects. In effect, in spite of the private caracteristic of this school (enterely managed by the Association which assume also the total costs), we chose to follow the governemental program in order to inscribe the students in a regular and recognized scholar cursus so as to close any door for them in future. The originality of the school is the addition of some subjects regarding Wildlife and Environment, their disappearance and the consequencies for the human species.
Finally, the first two pensionnaries of the center have been rescue on the 10 september while they were enchained on bamboo fruit stand on the side of the road in view to be sold by the villagers. Their health state was more than precarious and worrying. Happily their health improved day after day with intensive cares and a presence 24 h by 24 h to reassure them. Now, they are full of life and taste it with pleasure, playing together. You can become the patron of one of them (for this please consult the adoption page in "support us". ).

Parc Zoologique de La Bourbansais: 600 euros
June 2008
The animations and the selling of some objects at the Zoological Park of Paris allow SVAA to collect 1802 euros. We want to thank all the persons who contributed in buying or giving, the Director of the Park Mrs Morrier who allowed the animations and the staff who welcomed us warmly.
The Fondation Le Pal Nature chose to support the Huro Program on the long term. The first donation is composed of a quarantine aviary, a rehabilitation aviary and a transport cage for an amount of 2606 euros. Its moral, financial support and its wish to support us on the long term make the Fondation Le Pal Nature one of the most important sponsor of the Program which one we are happy to work.
Dr Tortschanoff, veterinary of the Zoological Park Le Pal and Coordinator of the Fondation Le Pal Nature joint the Scientific committee of the Program. We are happy to welcome her in the equip, feeling shared by the other members of the committee.

May 2008
Two new sponsors have added their support to the
program: The Foundation of the Zoological Park of Le Pal
(France) (which support is still in study) and the IBM
enterprise (1000 $).
The Administration Council and the General
Assembly of SVAA have taken place the 5 and 6 of May.
The scientific committee of the Huro Program has
been officialized, the members are the following:
| -Dr Moisson Pierre, Director of the
Zoological Park of Mulhouse (France), member of EAZA.
-Dr Chai Norin, Head of the Veterinary
Department of the Menagerie du Jardins des Plantes
(France), President of YABOUMBA and ELEFANTASIA.
-Dr Lassalle Bruno, Veterinary doctor,
former Director of the Zoological Park of Paris.
-Dr J.P Sati, Indian scientist, specialist
of the Western Hoolock Gibbon, Northern Zoological
Survey of India. |

April 2008
The founders have obtained their visas of work
and their departure his previous for the middle of May in
order to begin the first installations of the center.
The association of veterinary doctors, YABOUMBA
is now an important sponsor of the Huro Program. Its financial
support (3000 euros) will allow to begin the installations.
Constitution of a scientific committee that will
have for mission to evaluate the rehabilitation and releasing
programs and to realize some ethologic studies regarding to
the Hoolock species so as to improve these process.
Animation of a stand at the Zoological Park of
Paris during all the scholar holidays.
March 2008
Since 11 march 2008 we have the official
authorization from the Chief Wildlife Warden, Mr Shri Kumar,
to realize the Huro Program in its totality and its
coordination by its two founders.
At this moment, only the visas lack to be able,
finally, to begin the activities that we have developp on
paper. This
should take 1 or 2 months, because of the impossibility of
convertion of visas on the Indian Territory. We have to take
it from an indian ambassy.
February 2007
Arrival of the founders in New Delhi in order to
negotiate with the central forests authorities. Meeting with
the former indian minister of the Enviroment, the Culture, the
Social Justice and creator of the ministry of the Animal
Welfare, actual member of the indian Parliament (Lok Sabha),
Madam Maneka Gandhi.
Meeting and discussion with the Zoo Authority, in
New Delhi, that governs the wildlife rescue centers in the
country, with whom we decided to begin by a wildlife transit
facility (that supposes that all the animals go back to the
wild), which facilitates the applications because, at this
time, the program has not to be submitted to the Supreme Court
(that takes a minimum of 6 months, but which application will
be done in a next future after the beginning of the settlement
of the Program). Thus, now the official authorization that we
need will comes from the forests authorities of the Meghalaya
state (India being a federal republic).
Obtaining of the Patronage of Madam Maneka Gandhi
who will now be as a guardian angel for the Huro Program.
Parternship with her association, People For Animals, which
will act as a protection regarding the Program, without any
exchange of fund.

Submission of our proposal to the Principal Chief
Conservator of Forests, in Shillong (Meghalaya) who welcome it
in a good way.
January 2007
Realization of the layout of a little
sensitization book regarding the disappearance of the WHG and
the forests, in English and in Garo, that will be distributed
among the young Garos.
Editing of a proposal for a MoU (memorandum of
Understanding) so as to obtain from the Indian Ministry of
Environment and Forests the authorization to rescue primates
that rae protected by the indian and international laws and to
create the necessary structure.
December 2007
Return of the founders on the indian territory,
accompanied by the film director.
Spotting in the West Garo Hills in order to find
the right place for the settlement of the center. Obtaining of
an agreement with the responsibles of the Chandigre village
that allocates a land of 2 hectars to the Huro Program in a
collaboration way.
November 2007
Meeting with a film director concernong the
realization of a documentary on the Garo culture to whom the
founders have proposed their help for the realization of his
spotting. The region being isolated from the international
interest, it appears to us as important to make the rich and
unknown culture of this region known by the western countries.
October 2007
Continuation
of the research of funds for the creation of the
Program on place. The La Palmyre Zoo (France)
gave a contribution for the program in october.
We
are at Vincennes Zoo (France) from October 27 to
November 11. If you are in France at this time,
you can come and see us in front of Chimène the
gabriellae Gibbon of the Park.

The
foundators are in search of sponsors in order to
collect the necessary funds for the beginning of
the Huro Program in India.
February
to June 2007
Return
of the foundators after 5 months in the Garo
Hills.
The
populations of Hoolock are in a critical
situation: 2753 individuals in the whole
northeast India and 236 in the Meghalaya
state. The "jhum cultivation" (
specific local culture which consist in
burning the forest around the villages)
devastate the Garo Hills (West of
Meghalaya), where the majority of Hoolock
families is. We can add the plantations
of betlenut (which indian people are mad
about), the tea plantations and the coal
open mines (exploited night and day, that
yield 25 roupies per kg, around 0.5 euros).
The indian scientists are definite:
Meghalaya will be a desert in 30 years,
certainly less. |
 |

Hoolock family in a
songacham
 |
The traffic is an another
problematic with the illegal pet trade,
the zoos, the minizoos and the
laboratories. Moreover, the Hoolock coat
is used in Arunachal Pradesh as a finery,
his meat is consumed generaly in the
whole northeast India and his bones are
sold for the traditional medicine (fertility)
in China, in Burma and in India. The only
exception is the villages sacred forest,
inhabited by one part of the Garo
population who have a particular belief
among the Hoolock that protects him in
the limits of the songacham (surroundings
of the village). It is said that the
Hoolock families sing louder during the
ceremony days and are silent when someone
die in the village. However, this habitat
is not the one of the Hoolock and some
sanitary risks are sometimes deplored in
this situation of proximity with the
houses (transmission of deseases, dog
attacks...). Furthermore, the families
used to the human presence are exposed
and easy targets for some poachers who
circumvent the Nokma (village chief)
authority. At last, the songacham does
not represent a viable territory on the
long term because of its situation
without connection with the forest that
does not allow the youngs to fund a new
family (creation of floating individuals).
Another threats press on
the Hoolock populations and the situation
emergency speed up us to collect the
necessary funds.
We are working now with Dr
J.P Sati, an indian scientist who is one
of the best specialist on the Hoolock. We
are waiting for the official
authorization from Kolkata to attach him
definitely to the Huro Program.
At Delhi we have met the
ancient minister of the Environment, the
Social Justice and the Animal Welfare,
Madam Maneka Gandhi who offered to us he
support for the continuity of the Program.
In Meghalaya, we have met
some officials from the Departement of
Forest who were joyful about such an
initiative in the state and approved of
the necessity of this structure.
However, the indian
government was clear, no negociation
without funds. We have to collect at less
25 000 euros (total of the funds for the
structure: 50 000 euros) to begin. |
