The loss of habitat constitutes one of the major threat towads the Western Hoolock Gibbon species and the other primates from northeast India.

A strategy has to be defined in partnership with the authorities and the local populations so as to fight efficiently against poaching and deforestation. We want to work with Indian scientists who are working on the long-lasting development regarding agriculture and the Garo authorities in order to find somealternatives to the "jhum cultivation".

Concerning the deforestation the battle is based on 4 major points:

-Rescue of the individuals from the traffic and the rehabilitation program in order to give them back their freedom.

-Support to the protection of Parks and Wildlife Reserves. In effect, the almost absence of protection in these areas and the few means that have the rangers are the direct cause of the illegal and anarchic taking of flora and fauna. This can be materialized by the creation of some special squads for the protection of the Parks and Reserves (example of Wildaid in Cambodia). We have to remember that Indian flora and fauna are protected in texts by the Wildlife Act of 1972 and that India has ratify the Convention of Washington.

-Extension of the protected areas.

-Sensitization and support to the local populations. In effect, the poverty and the lack of sensitization regarding the near disappearence of their environment which they depend, are often the first causes of problems.

The forest areas of the Garo Hills are a hope for the Hoolock populations but they need more protection and some campaign of awareness towards the local population concerning their vital importance.

The SVAA works in partnership with the Department of Forests and involves it in each of its actions regarding wildlife and habitat.
